Phone & Video Appointments

Virtual Care in Southeast Calgary

Some non-emergency health concerns can be assessed by phone or video, allowing you to speak with a physician without travelling to the clinic. Empathy Collaborative Health offers virtual appointments when remote care is appropriate for your concern.

New and existing patients may request a virtual visit, subject to physician and appointment availability.

An online submission is an appointment request, not an automatic confirmation. The clinic will confirm the appointment time, format and physician availability.

Speak With a Physician From Home

Virtual care, sometimes called telemedicine or telehealth, is a medical appointment completed remotely using a telephone or video connection. During the visit, the physician can review your concern, ask about your symptoms and health history, discuss appropriate next steps, and arrange follow-up when needed.

Virtual care can make it easier to access non-emergency medical advice when a physical examination is not required. It also supports continuity with a clinic that can arrange an in-person assessment in southeast Calgary if your concern cannot be fully evaluated remotely.

Connected to In-Person Care

If your concern cannot be safely or completely assessed virtually, Empathy Collaborative Health can recommend an appropriate next step, including an in-person clinic appointment when appropriate.

Appropriate Virtual Care

What Can Be Discussed During a Virtual Appointment?

The right appointment type depends on your symptoms, medical history, location, and whether a physician needs to examine you or take measurements.

Follow-Up Care

Follow-up for certain concerns that have already been assessed.

Results Review

Discussion of certain test or imaging results and possible next steps.

Medication Questions

Medication questions or prescription renewal requests when appropriate.

Ongoing Conditions

Monitoring and discussion of some ongoing health conditions.

Mental Health

Mental health, stress, mood or sleep-related concerns.

Preventive Care

Discussion of preventive care, screening and health planning.

New Symptoms

Non-urgent questions about new symptoms when remote assessment is suitable.

Next Steps

Care planning, referrals and next-step discussions when clinically appropriate.

Please note: A virtual appointment does not guarantee a prescription, test, referral, diagnosis, medical form or specific treatment. The physician will recommend next steps based on the information available and their clinical assessment.
In-Person Assessment

When Is an In-Person Appointment Needed?

A phone or video visit cannot replace every office appointment. Your physician may recommend an in-person visit when your concern requires:

✓
A physical examination, vital signs or other measurements.
✓
A procedure, injection, sample collection or point-of-care test.
✓
Symptoms that are difficult to assess safely without an examination.
✓
A skin concern where colour, texture, tenderness or other details require closer assessment.
✓
Forms, documentation or identity verification that must be completed in person.
✓
A change in symptoms requiring urgent or more detailed evaluation.

Before Your Appointment

Prepare for Your Phone or Video Visit

A few simple preparations can help make your appointment more focused and useful.

01 Choose a quiet, private location with a reliable phone or internet connection.
02 Charge your device and test the camera, microphone and connection if video will be used.
03 Write down your main concern, when it started and what has changed.
04 Have medications, allergies, home readings and pharmacy information nearby.
05 Keep relevant photographs, reports or results available if requested by the clinic.
06 Tell the clinic before your visit if you require communication or accessibility support.
Clinical Decisions

Prescriptions, Tests, and Referrals

A physician may discuss medication, testing or referral options during a virtual visit. Any prescription, renewal, requisition or referral depends on an appropriate assessment and is not automatic. An in-person examination or updated testing may be required before a decision can be made.

If a prescription is clinically appropriate, confirm which pharmacy should receive it and ask when to follow up. Some medications have additional prescribing requirements and may not be appropriate to initiate or renew through a virtual appointment.

Continuity of Care

Frequently Asked Questions About Virtual Care

What is a virtual medical appointment?
A virtual medical appointment is a visit with a physician by telephone or video. It may be appropriate when the concern can be assessed without a hands-on examination, measurement, test or procedure.
Can new patients request virtual care?
Yes. New patients may request a virtual appointment, subject to physician capacity, appointment availability and the nature of the concern. The clinic or physician may recommend an in-person first visit. Visit our New Patients page for more information.
How do I book a virtual doctor appointment in Calgary?
Submit the online appointment request or call Empathy Collaborative Health at 587-864-4152. The clinic will confirm whether a phone or video visit is appropriate and available. An online request does not automatically confirm an appointment.
Will my appointment be by phone or video?
The format depends on the reason for your visit, the physician's assessment needs and clinic availability. Staff will confirm whether the appointment will take place by telephone, video or in person.
Can a physician prescribe medication during a virtual visit?
A physician may prescribe or renew medication when it is clinically appropriate and prescribing requirements are met. A prescription is not guaranteed, and an in-person assessment or testing may be needed.
Can skin concerns be assessed virtually?
Some skin concerns may begin with a virtual discussion, but many require an in-person examination. Colour, texture, tenderness and other details can be difficult to assess remotely, and photographs alone may not provide enough information.
What happens if the physician cannot assess me virtually?
The physician or clinic will explain the next step. This may include an in-person appointment at Empathy Collaborative Health, testing, another healthcare service or more urgent assessment depending on the concern.
Are virtual appointments covered by Alberta Health?
Eligible medically necessary physician services may be covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan. Coverage depends on patient eligibility and the service provided. Uninsured services may involve a fee; ask the clinic before your appointment.
Do I need to be in Alberta for my virtual appointment?
Tell the clinic where you will be physically located during the appointment. Licensing, professional obligations and coverage can depend on patient and physician location, so the clinic must confirm whether it can provide the visit.
Is virtual care appropriate for an emergency?
No. Do not use the online booking form, email or a routine virtual appointment for an emergency. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For non-emergency health advice in Alberta, call Health Link at 811.
